Permission and Citation

Citing The New School Archives’ Resources

The purpose of citation is to further scholarly conversation. By providing a way for others to locate and access sources employed in creating academic, artistic, and design works, you help to keep the conversation active across space and time.

In all New School Archives’ finding aids you will find a “Citation” button at the upper right corner of your screen, clicking this will show you one way to format a citation for an archival source.

You are welcome to use alternate formatting provided the citation includes the following information:

  • Collection title

  • Physical location of cited item (box and folder number, when applicable; for unprocessed collections, in place of box and folder indicate "unprocessed collection")

  • For digital records found in our Digital Collections database, indicate that the resource was found online

  • Name and location of our repository: The New School Archives, The New School, New York, N.Y.

In situations where a full citation is not desirable, such as in social media posts, it is necessary to state within the text of the post that the source is The New School Archives. If you are using Twitter (@tnsarchives) or Instagram (@newschoolarchives), tagging us in your post is sufficient.

Don’t hesitate to contact us at archivist@newschool.edu to get help with citations, references or bibliographies including our resources.

Publishing Content from The New School Archives

We are happy to provide files suitable for publication in print, audiovisual, and online platforms. In many cases, however, The New School Archives does not own the copyrights in the materials in our collections; we only possess physical ownership. In these cases, The New School Archives does not have the ability to either grant or deny permission to publish. Our staff will assist researchers by providing any information we have about potential rights holders, or by contacting the potential rights holders on the researcher’s behalf. High resolution files will be provided only upon receipt of our Permission to Publish Agreement, which releases The New School from responsibility in the event of claims related to copyright violations. For more information, contact archivist@newschool.edu with details about your project.

While the Archives does not charge a fee for already-scanned or born-digital resources, we do charge fees for the labor of scanning or other digital reformatting of analog materials. Please consult our guide on scanning.
